G7 nations join forces to ensure fair competition, prevent tech giants' dominance in AI

News - On 8 November, competition agency representatives from the Group of Seven nations agreed to work together more closely in ensuring fair market practices, especially in cutting-edge technologies like generative artificial intelligence and online virtual spaces.

In an official statement after their meeting in Tokyo, the agencies committed to share updates on digital market laws. This is to ensure they stay informed about changes and developments, contributing to fair competition in their respective economies.

Why is this important though? This move is significant because it addresses the risk of a few major players dominating emerging technologies like generative AI. If unchecked, such dominance could create an environment that hampers competition.

In a joint statement, the G7 agencies warned that not taking action in these markets could be costly. They also emphasized the need for regulatory authorities to understand the impact of emerging technologies on competition.

The statement also highlighted that big tech firms with control over training data and necessary computing power for generative AI development could exploit consumers through unfair practices, including price hikes. This is particularly relevant, given the dominance of tech giants like Google and Apple in the smartphone sector, prompting several countries to rethink their regulations in recent years.

Google's AI-powered search SGE expands to 120+ countries and territories, adds new features

News - Google's AI-powered conversational search experience, SGE (Search Generative Experience), is now launching in over 120 new countries and territories worldwide, after its initial debut in the U.S, India, and Japan.

It has also announced support for four new languages—Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, and Indonesian— in addition to English, Hindi, and Japanese.

Are there any other improvements? Yes, SGE will see the following minor improvements:

  • Google will test a new feature allowing users to ask follow-up questions on the search results page. It will also display previously asked questions and search ads in dedicated slots. The feature is aimed at enhancing topic exploration, while keeping ads relevant in the AI era.

  • SGE's translation feature will also get an upgrade. Now, when translating, users will be able to tap on words that have multiple meanings and select the intended meaning for clarity in communication.

  • The last improvement involves SGE's definitions feature, which initially covered science, economics, and history. The feature will now let users ask the meaning for difficult words related to coding and health. Additionally, words related to these topics will be highlighted, allowing users to preview definitions and view related images.

These features will be initially rolled out to users in the U.S in the coming weeks. However, there are plans to expand to additional countries in the future.

Samsung joins the generative AI race, unveils its own model 'Samsung Gauss'

News - On 8 November, Samsung introduced its generative AI model, Samsung Gauss, during the company's AI Forum 2023. The model comprises three tools: Language, Code, and Image.

How do these 3 tools work?

  • The first tool, Samsung Gauss Language, is a large language model that works just like ChatGPT. It aids productivity by helping with tasks like email writing, document summarization, and language translation. Samsung plans to add this model to its phones, laptops and tablets, to boost their functionality.

  • The next tool, Samsung Gauss Code, helps developers write code quickly. It works in collaboration with its code assistant, code.i, and is designed to support tasks like code description and generating test cases through an interactive interface.

  • Lastly, the Samsung Gauss Image, as the name suggests, serves as an image generation and editing feature. It can be used to transform a low-resolution image into a high-resolution one, among other things.

While Samsung Gauss is currently in use exclusively by the company's internal staff, the company has said that it plans to make it available to the public "in the near future," without specifying a timeline.
