United Nations launches advisory body to tackle opportunities and global governance of AI

.♨️News - On 26 October, the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres announced the formation of a 39-member advisory body created to address issues related to the international governance of artificial intelligence.

This initiative seeks to encourage a global conversation involving various experts to maximize the advantages and minimize the risks of AI technology for all of humanity.

👥Who are the members? The group comprises individuals from various sectors and nations, including tech executives such as Sony's CTO Hiroaki Kitano, OpenAI's CTO Mira Murati, and Microsoft's Chief Responsible AI Officer Natasha Crampton. It also includes government officials from Spain to Saudi Arabia, and academics including AI expert Vilas Dhar from the U.S. and Professor Yi Zeng from China, representing a global mix.

🤔What will the advisory body focus on? With the group's first meeting set for 27 October, their primary focus will be reaching a global agreement on the risks and challenges associated with AI, as well as strengthening international cooperation for AI governance.

Notably, The UN body plans to release initial recommendations by the year's end and final recommendations by summer 2024.

The surge of AI-generated content on the internet worsens Israel-Hamas war

🥷News - Following the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October, the internet has been flooded with AI-generated images, that have made the conflict between the two groups worse and also added to the growing confusion about what's real and what is not.

🪖How did AI become a part of the war though? Notably, two images related to the war recently went viral. The first image showed an Israeli refugee camp within Palestinian territory, while the second depicted football fans raising a Palestinian flag. Even though both the images looked real, they were actually made using AI and shared by Pro-Palestinian accounts to get more support for their cause and make Israeli authorities look bad.

💂‍♂️Has Israel also been using AI amid the war? While Israel has also been using AI, it has done so for a positive cause. Volunteers from Israel's thriving tech sector have teamed up to identify missing individuals following the attacks with the help of AI.

They have collected images from social media and families, to match and identify captives using facial recognition AI. This team has successfully identified around 60 captives to date and shared their findings with the Israeli military's special unit responsible for managing the hostage crisis.

OpenAI creates a new strategy to prepare for the risks of advanced AI models

☕News - As part of its mission to ensure the safe and responsible use of highly advanced AI systems, Open AI has formed a new strategy to prepare for potential risks that can arise from AI being misused. This includes the creation of a Preparedness team and the launch of a Preparedness challenge.

🧐In what way will these initiatives help? The Preparedness team led by Aleksander Madry will mainly focus on addressing and minimizing the risks that come with advanced AI systems. The team will help monitor, assess, predict, and protect against severe risks across various domains, such as digital threats, chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear hazards, and autonomous systems that can replicate and adapt on their own.

Meanwhile, the Preparedness challenge will serve as a means for OpenAI to identify less obvious areas of concern. Under the challenge, OpenAI is inviting people to submit ideas that mainly focus on how bad actors might use OpenAI's advanced AI model weights if they were stolen. AI model weights are the settings and information that enable an AI model to perform its tasks. A reward for this will be given to the top 10 ideas.
